ABOUT THE ITINERARY
Exhilarating walks in Hwange National Park, visits to the thundering Victoria Falls and game drives through the enchanting Matobo Hills all feature on this Simply Zimbabwe itinerary.
You will start your luxury holiday with what is ranked amongst the world’s greatest natural spectacles, the Victoria Falls. You can get up close to the cascades in a boat, but perhaps the best way to appreciate the grandeur of the Falls is from above in a helicopter ride known as the ‘flight of angels’. Regardless of the angle, the view of this Natural Wonder of the World never disappoints.
Next comes excursions in Hwange National Park, the largest reserve in the country at over one million hectares. Across woodlands, grasslands and scrub you will encounter various animals such as elephant, buffalo, lion, southern giraffe and spotted hyena who coexist alongside a myriad of multi-coloured birds. You will finish in the mystical region of Matobo Hills, a boulder-strewn area of granite kopjes, hills and valleys formed many millennia ago.
VICTORIA FALLS
Arriving in Victoria Falls, you will be met and taken to your superbly located lodge. Situated on the Zimbabwean side of the mighty Zambezi River, you’ll find yourself within walking distance of the magnificent cascades.
Naturally ranked amongst the World’s Seven Natural Wonders, the sheer scale of the Victoria Falls will take your breath away. It consists of a mile-long string of waterfalls that pour into a plunging gorge, causing great clouds of spray to rise above the ravine. As well as guided tours to the Falls, there are historical sites to visit, wildlife to spot, sunset cruises, rafting and hiking in the pristine natural surroundings to enjoy.
Stay: Two nights in a deluxe room at Ilala Lodge – bed & breakfast
HWANGE NATIONAL PARK
On day four your journey continues by light aircraft to Hwange National Park, where you’ll be staying in a private concession in the northern reaches of the park. Surrounded by waterholes, Camp Hwange offers a truly authentic safari with a combination of game drives and exciting bush walks – both in the concession and the park as a whole. By setting out on foot you’ll get to encounter some of the smaller, lesser-known species often missed in a vehicle, whilst night drives are a chance to meet with the park’s nocturnal creatures. Expert guides will lead excursions and let you in on the secrets of the African bush.
Stay: Four nights in a double tent at Camp Hwange – full board
MATOBO HILLS NATIONAL PARK
On day eight you will fly to Bulawayo and be transferred to your lodge in the UNESCO-listed Matobo Hills National Park, home to some of the most breath-taking granite scenery on the planet. Here you can find granite domes and castle kopjes formed millions of years ago, and trace the history of the indigenous San Bushmen in the ancient rock paintings. Wildlife is prolific, with leopards, antelopes, zebra, ostrich and black and white rhino all present, not to mention birds such as cut-throat finches, black kites, broad-billed rollers and black eagles.
You will be led through this enchanting area by knowledgeable and professional guides, enjoying historic treks to Rhodes’ grave, sunset hikes to the tops of granite dwalas, excursions to renowned caves and game drives within the national park. Tucked away amongst the hills in an ancient bushman’s shelter, Camp Amalinda perfectly complements the unique beauty of its surroundings. Rooms are set within the granite boulders and each have their own unique style.
Stay: Three nights in a double room at Camp Amalinda – full board
