ITINERARY INSPIRATION
From the salt-crusted pans of the Kalahari to the shimmering channels of the Okavango Delta, our Africa specialists will craft a tailor-made journey through Botswana’s wildest corners in true safari style.
TO BE EXPLORED ON SAFARI
With more than 25 percent of its land set aside for national parks and game reserves, Botswana is a place of low-volume tourism, promising an exclusive safari holiday that is rich in diverse wildlife. From the infamous meerkats of the Makgadikgadi Pans to the Big Five roaming the winding waterways of the Okavango Delta, a Botswana safari is a must for those seeking a variety of contrasting habitats, epic wildlife and stunning scenery.
Between the months of July and October, the best time for Botswana safaris, you can travel to the banks of the Boteti River to see the end of the zebra migration. From here head to the famous Okavango Delta, where you can explore the wetlands by mokoro (a traditional dug-out canoe) and speedboat, explore the planes by 4×4 and fly over the delta in a small plane or helicopter, and witness the wildlife congregating around the floodwater sources.

In the north eastern region of the arid plains of the Kalahari Desert lies the Makgadikgadi Pans. Here you can quad bike across the white-crusted salt landscapes, sleep under the star-filled skies and encounter an array of wildlife, including the inquisitive meerkats and the spectacular flamingos.
There are countless luxury Botswana safari lodges including Duba Plains Camp, where you will have the most intimate and up-close viewing of Botswana’s epic wildlife from the comfort of your own room. Our Africa travel specialists share their expert knowledge, answering your most frequently asked questions about designing the perfect tailor-made Botswana safari and holiday with us.
What is the process to craft a tailor-made luxury safari to Botswana?
We start my learning about your past safari experiences, and what you are hoping to see and experience whilst away. This provides a foundation for us to build a tailored itinerary that perfectly suits your needs. For example, if you are interested in birds then the peak/dry season is not the best time to visit, and if you are interested in seeing elephants and avoiding the crowds, we would suggest Linyanti over Chobe. There is a huge amount on offer in Botswana, and ways in which to experience it, and its only after this initial conversation that we can start putting the perfect trip together for our clients.
When is the best time of year to go on safari in Botswana?
As referenced above, it really does depend on what you are looking for. If you don’t mind the chance of a splash of rain and a bit of warmth, then November (which falls into Shoulder season) can be a fantastic time to travel. The migratory birds start returning, the water levels (if the Delta has had a good flood that year) should still be high enough to allow boating activities at most camps, and the grass is still low enough for easy game viewing. But, in all honestly, each month and season brings its own charm and highlights. It really is an all year-round destination.
Which regions or safari areas in Botswana are recommended and what type of experiences are expected?
Our top three are the Kalahari, for your desert and San bushman experience. It gives you an idea of what the Delta would be like if it didn’t receive its annual flood from Angola. Linyanti, which is located to the Northeast of the Delta, and is a fantastic area in which to see good number of Lion and Elephant. And then, last but not least, the Okavango Delta itself. The beating heart of Botswana’s safari and one of very few places in which you can head on a walking safari, boat safari and 4×4 safari in one day. The game here is plentiful, and it’s a wonderful place in which to spot game with no crowds.
What kind of accommodation and activities are available, how flexible is a tailor-made holiday?
There is a smorgasbord of accommodation options to enjoy in Botswana, but we only sell camps that we have visited ourselves and that we feel are suitable for our clients. This ranges from cozy tented camps with bucket showers, to luxury suites with air conditioning and private plunge pools. All our trips are fully flexible, and the itineraries online really are simply sample itineraries to give you an idea of what you can do and see whilst away. The reality is that very few, if any, of our trips are the same and no client is alike.
Is Botswana safe for travellers, especially those travelling alone or in remote areas?
Fantastically so and well known as one of the safest and most stable countries in Africa. Lots of our solo travelers return there again and again because of this, and because safari (as a whole) is a brilliant way in which to meet new people (whilst chatting around the fireplace at night, or enjoying nibbles during a stunning sundowner).
Can travellers combine Botswana with other destinations? Do you recommend nearby countries, other wildlife areas or natural attractions?
Yes! We love to combine Botswana with Victoria Falls (3 hours travel from most camps in the Delta), to relax after their safari for a couple of nights and to enjoy the history and beauty of the Falls. Beach goers also love to combine Botswana with Mozambique, which provides a perfect bare food luxury finale to an energetic safari. And, lastly, for any wine and food lovers Cape Town can act as the perfect stopping point one your way out or home.
What should travellers pack: what to wear, what gear is useful, what luggage restrictions to expect?
Pack light. All camps in Botswana have quick (and included) laundry services on site, so you really don’t need that much kit. Lightweight trousers and shirts are key whilst out on safari. Along with a good fleece and hat for the cold mornings and nights. On top of that, you are in one of the best places in the world for game viewing, so bring a good pair of binoculars and, if you are a photographer, a camera with a long lens is always useful.
Is a visa to travel to Botswana required?
Not for UK, US or EU passport holders. You must have at least 3 blank pages in your passport and at least 6 months remaining, after the date of your arrival.
What vaccinations or health precautions are necessary (malaria, water safety, etc.)?
With vaccinations nothing is mandatory to get into Botswana, but it’s suggested that you discuss vaccinations with your local GP/travel clinic to ensure that your jabs are up to date.
Botswana does have malaria so doctors will recommend antimalarials. It’s best not to drink the water, but showers etc in it are fine. Camps will provide plenty of filtered water during your visits to drink and brush your teeth with.
Is Botswana good for a family holiday?
Botswana, as with all safari holidays, is a fantastic place for any aspiring young Attenborough’s out there and the guides are a fountain of knowledge for adults and children alike. Some camps do have age limits, so it is worth discussing options with one of our specialists, and some activities (such as guided walks and mokoro) are restricted to more grown-up children. As a rule of thumb 8 years and over is a good starting age for 4×4 safari, and walks/mokoro are best for 12 years and over.
When travelling with children 17 or under you require an original or certified copy of the full birth certificate of any child aged 17 or under when you enter or leave the country. And any parent not present must sign an affidavit giving their consent for the child to travel.
