Tumbling down the foothills of the Maritime Alps to a stunning shore lapped by the gleaming waters of the Mediterranean, the world’s second smallest country (second only to The Vatican) has so much to offer.
Monaco – of which Monte Carlo is the most famous district – is undoubtedly synonymous with luxury. It’s a place where the rich and famous come to play among Michelin-starred restaurants, classic casinos (notably the Casino de Monte-Carlo) and a glamorous harbour littered with multi-million pound mega yachts.
The Formula 1 Grand Prix draws a well-heeled crowd each May, and is a great opportunity for visitors to bask in some of that famous Monaco glitz. Other big annual events include the Tennis Masters Series in April, the Monte Carlo Opera and the Spring Arts Festival.
But away from the dazzle of its nightclubs and luxury hotel towers, Monaco has its fair share of simpler pleasures – its balmy climate and pretty coastal bays, its charming old town and al fresco cafes, its botanic gardens and 19th century opera house.
The country itself has an interesting past, home to Europe’s longest-ruling royal family – the Grimaldi family – some of whom reside in the Prince’s Palace atop the famous “Rock of Monacoâ€.
