Built on a stately tree island in the midst of seasonal floodplains, woodlands and glassy lagoons, Mapula Lodge is one of only a handful of camps in a vast, 200,000-acre concession. Quirky and colourful, it comprises just nine thatched cottages, each with a metal framed four-poster bed and private veranda. The main area features an aquamarine pool – the perfect escape on a hot Delta afternoon – as well as a sunken lounge with views over the hippo-filled lagoon below.
In this blissfully uncrowded landscape, guests are treated to rewarding game viewing year-round. Lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, hippo and the rare sitatunga antelope all roam here, as well as countless birds. Expect to safari in complete exclusivity on classic game drives, boat excursions and traditional mokoro safaris which will allow you to explore remote, lily-filled channels. Trained by safari legend Ralph Bousfield, Mapula’s guides are renowned for their extensive knowledge of the area.
