AUTHENTIC WILDERNESS LODGE

A true wilderness lodge with excellent eco-credentials, Bale Mountain Lodge welcomes intrepid travellers into a little-visited corner of Ethiopia.

Though deep within Bale Mountains National Park, some 250 miles southeast of Addis Ababa, the journey is well worth making. The lodge sits in a beautiful clearing in the largely unexplored Harenna cloud forest, surrounded by the continent’s largest tract of Afro-alpine moorland. It’s a place full of secret wildlife, some unknown to science.

Bale Mountain Lodge, Bale Mountains National Park

The largest packs of rare Ethiopian wolves roam free here, along with lions, giant forest hogs, endemic Bale monkeys, bushbuck and an array of unusual birds. Marked tracks lead into the forest, each offering a different experience.

Fashioned from local stone and thatch, rooms are adorned with simple wooden furnishings and log burners for chillier mountain nights. In keeping with its eco-credentials, firewood is sourced from sustainable plantations, and energy generated from a nearby micro-hydro plant.

The main building nestles into the hillside to minimise its visual impact. Here you’ll find a cosy sunken fireplace and a dining area built in the traditional ‘tukul’ style. A sweep of windows maximises the views of the lovely surroundings.

“FAULTLESS AND FUN”
We’ve just returned from a Danube cruise with Douglas Skeggs and Joanna Worsley, with a few days in Vienna beforehand – all brilliantly overseen by Emily. From meet and greet at the airport to every detail on board the Amadeus Cara, the organisation was seamless. We’re already looking forward to our next Escorted Tour with 91ºÚÁÏÍø.

“TRIP TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD”
Everything about our trip was excellent. While it’s a considered investment, the service more than justifies the cost. We loved the accommodation – beautifully chosen and thoughtfully located. Our guides ranged from grear to truly exceptional. And the places we visited? They exceeded all expectations. Peru is an extraordinarily beautiful country, and this journey gave us a real sense of its wonder.

“SEAMLESSLY ORGANISED, TRULY UNFORGETTABLE”
The itinerary was spot on. Claire really listened and understood the kind of holiday I wanted – from the hotels to the pace of the trip. The team on the ground were exceptional: friendly, efficient, and always one step ahead, helping with everything from flight check-ins to tax-free procedures at the end. The guides were knowledgeable and genuinely helpful. I had an amazing time. Thank you!
